Using 'Foal-Proof'

Hume Equine services are pleased to announce the launch of an extended Home Equine test package. Hume Equine can now offer faecal testing for worms and parasites: - Why test for worms? Large and small Strongyle (Blood Worm, Red Worm and Palisade Worm) infections are on the rise in horses throughout the world due to increasing resistance to standard worming treatments. The sooner an infection is detected the easier it is to remove, and the less damage is done to your horse. Common Symptoms Signs associated with significant worm infections vary dependant upon the parasite involved, the numbers of worms present and the season of the year. Common indicators of a possible worm problem include weight loss despite eating well, poor body condition and diarrhoea. Severe worm burdens may lead to weakness, anaemia and emaciation. S. vulgaris infection of blood vessels may lead to the formation of blood clots with interference to intestinal blood flow resulting in colic, intestinal failure, gangrenous enteritis, and the possibility of twisted and prolapsed intestine which could be fatal. Our Services The tests we offer will detect large and small Strongyle infections, ascarid and protozoal infections which are common infections affecting the health of horses. The procedure is simple order the quantity of tests you require via our website www.foalproof.co.uk and we will despatch sample containers within 48 hrs. Follow the detailed instructions and using the prepaid delivery service send the samples with completed documentation to our approved test facility. As soon as result is available you will be e-mailed and a confirmation sent via first class post.

Please Note

At least 120 days should have elapsed since breeding services before a 'Foal-Proof' test is run. It is not recommended to use 'Foal-Proof' earlier than this.

Mares that are less than 120 days pregnant may not have sufficiently elevated blood concentrations of pregnancy specific steroid metabolites to return a positive 'Foal-Proof' test result, and an equivocal or false negative diagnosis may result.

Non-veterinarians should consult with their veterinarian about blood sampling the mare, and the preparation of serum or plasma.

If a centrifuge to spin the blood sample is not available out in the field, blood will separate by itself if left to stand 30-45 minutes in a cool area.
